Valentine’s Day Craft/Math

One year I taught a combo 4th and 5th grade class. For their Valentine’s Day craft, i decided to teach the students how to make a beaded heart and tie it into fractions, decimals, and percentages. Unfortunately, I can’t locate all the photos but here is a basic idea of what it looked like.

I made these crafts when I was also doing my MA in Educational Technology so I made a quick Glogster a few years ago with step by step picture instructions that the students followed. Who knew I would be posting it up now? Beaded Heart Tutorial

In case you’re wondering, a Glogster is an online blogging site where you can add videos, sound, and pictures. I didn’t care much for the website but I needed to utilize it for a quick assignment.

Some tips:

  1. Use fishing line as a cheap option. Otherwise, clear elastic 1mm thick is good, nothing thinner than that or it’ll stretch and break too easily.
  2. This craft takes a few hours to complete. The most difficult part for my kids was keeping the string tight.
  3. Seal the knot with superglue to make sure it doesn’t unravel.
  4. Beading is hard for kids. I recommend going step by step, and having the kids who understand your direction help the rest of the class.
